Today I took 283 pictures. As I load them onto my computer I always hope there will be a keeper in there among the many photo failures.
Because I sometimes just sit here and laugh at the ridiculous failures, I wanted to share a few of those with you.
Taking pictures of your own kids is harder than photographing other people’s kids. Taking pictures of 4 of your own kids at once is like asking for crazy to come over.
Photo Fail #1
I snatched Tess up right after her nap and didn’t even notice her white mohawk until we got out in the sunlight. I won’t even comment on the two older girls. And this might have been the one and only time Milo had a decent smile on his face.
Photo Fail #2
Leroy decided to join the party. The cat and the dogs made me yell quite a bit this afternoon. No wonder my throat is sore again.
Photo Fail #3
This was after we took a break and came back. I fixed Tess’s hair and even sneaked on a headband. Here she’s just about to discover she’s wearing something on her head. Clementine claimed to be bothered by a gnat. I can’t tell you how many times I yelled:
“PUT Your FEET DoWn!”
“Put yOUR HanDS DOwn!”
“LOOK at ME!”
“Stop maKING That StupID face.!”
“LOOK at ME NOT Tess!”
Photo Fail #4
See the dog in the background. I could live with that though if the kids were acting right.
All this to say, I know why you haven’t taken your Christmas picture yet. But this is not discouragement. It’s just to let you know, I feel your pain.

Aw, they're so cute! It's always cuter when it's someone else's kids. ;)
this is exactly why i rarely try to take family photos. and the sad thing is... my kids are about a decade older than yours. i told my oldest this summer that i was thinking about hiring a friend to come and take some family pics. he said, "with that nice camera of yours, why wouldn't you save the $$ and take them yourself?" um.... because i get frustrated just thinking about it. now that i think about it, he has a dslr now as well. maybe i should have *him* take them.
i did try taking some individual photos of my 2 youngest (14 & 11). out of about 80 pics, i got perhaps 5 nice ones abd zero fabulous ones. even the nice ones aren't all that nice. but then there were some fun ones, like spaz hanging upside down on the swing making a face... i so ought to just use that for his "14-y/o" picture.
You've aptly described why I don't even hope for a Christmas picture anymore. I make a photo card of MANY different pictures, so all the kids can be included AND look good. It's just too frustrating to get everyone smiling, looking and acting natural in one shot.
I adore the one witht the cat :)
Love it! You made me smile with this post--which I why I keep coming back here! :) As frustrating as these times are, some of my favorite photos end up being the 'failures' b/c they just capture LIFE! REAL expressions, real personalities, etc.
You have no idea how happy you've made me. because I was sure that every photo you take is all the beautiful ones you post. I guess I don't feel like such a failure now. Do you have any good photography books or magazines you'd recommend for a beginner? I've been looking around to find such a resource and have yet to come up with one.
Love it!
There Beautiful pictures :)
I just finished downloading all the pics from the desktop to the laptop and I stopped the counting when it reached over 4,ooo lol
Blessings,
Eevee
ah susan, i was afraid people might think that. out of the million or so pictures i take every year, only about 100 make the cut. take a lot and you're bound to get a few good ones by accident. that's my policy.
gonna take ours on Vet's day.
can't imagine how it's gonna go, but if i could just borrow your baby for a few hours I'm certain they'd be cuter...
actually, even though she's great at upstaging, I am constantly impressed by the beauty of all your kids. They have such a happy, relaxed glow to them... that beautiful fall scenery agrees with them each.
Growing up, it was hard to get 5 kids and the parents ALL looking great in a picture.
So sacrifices had to be made.
If all else fails, maybe this can be the year that Milo gets to look happy and normal in the Christmas card? And you can sacrifice everyone else. Perhaps they can have their turn for normal next Christmas. :)
I know, I know... you would never go for that. I am SURE that the next 284 will hold a real keeper!!!
That's so funny! I only have two kids so far and it's hard enough trying to get just the two of them right in a photo so i can imagine how much harder it is with 4 kiddos.
The one with the kitty rubbing Tess's face is my fav!
I can SO relate to this post!
soemthing about taking pictures like that and yelling like a lunatic I know too well. The last two years I used one from summer and there was no yelling:)
Yep, just about like my attempt the other day....and I am thinking about not even doing a Christmas card this year. That would be the 1st time in 8 yrs...I just don't got it in me! Want to come take mine for me?
Love 'em all!
I actually like the last one. Your kids are adorable, and they look cute in every picture.
Photo #2 is my favorite picture, EVER!!! it totally made my day.
You know, I love every one of them! No kidding. They make you smile, and even giggle, and that's what makes a great shot.
Okay, that just makes me feel good. To know you struggle getting your kids to all look at the right place~together! It's tiring taking pictures of my own:)
Take a look at the pictures again...they are beautifully filled with personality! So what if they weren't all looking at the camera at the same time. They look great!
