5 tips for finding the right pair of jeans

Friday I went shopping with my cousin and a friend and we had a great day. While we were out, I was determined to try on some jeans. I wrote this post a while back and since then have been pondering the many comments I got that told me to “keep trying”.

When did jean shopping become as stressful and involved as swimsuit shopping?

We began in a store that carried designer jeans. I tried on Citizen jeans, 7 jeans, Joe’s jeans (these worked the best of that brand). I was disappointed each time that they didn’t do some kind of miracle on my lower half, at that price they should.

I walked out without anything. Then we went in the buckle. Again, I tried on numerous pairs in a variety of sizes. I finally walked out with one pair, these. Which my cheering section all agreed looked great on me.

I learned a few things while jean shopping that may help you too.

pocket

1. Take a friend, or two. You need them to tell you that the jeans are too tight, or not too tight. Which ones look good and which ones don’t. And to keep you going. I would have given up long ago if I had been alone.

2. Try a few different sizes. It turned out I was size smaller than I thought in one style. In another style, I had to go up a size. Most jeans stretch and after wearing them all day, so no wonder I’m pulling them back up. They’ve stretched out and sagged down. You have to buy them tight. Which was weird for me.

3. Don’t dry your jeans in the dryer. This may not be specific shopping information, but it was something I learned in the process. I’m hopeless at laundry, but a couple of sales people gave me this advice. They say the stretch in the jean can get zapped by your dryer and ruin the jean. If I’m going to pay big money for a pair of jeans I guess I better commit to taking care of them.

4. Try on different styles. They do have a higher rise jean now, a mid-rise that is not as uncomfortable as those low, low rise jeans. There is also a huge variety of washes. And, amazingly, there will be wash that looks better on you.

5. Love the body you have right now. Not the body you want to have. Not the body you think you might have in the future. Don’t criticize your flaws in the mirror. Decide this is how you look right now and get the best look and fit for today.

Now go forth and shop for jeans!

Great advice!
I went jean shopping after reading your last post. I only had time to go into one store (Old Navy), but I walked out with 2 pairs of jeans, different styles, washes, and even sizes (same store). The one seemed to fit just right in the store (on what happened to be my "fat day"), now they only fit me a few days a month ahem, but at least I can be comfy on those days without resorting to sweats (which I loathe!). The other fit too tight in the store, but I thought they might stretch a bit, so I took a risk and bought them anyway, and now they fit almost perfectly, and I've been so pleased. I'm glad you found at least one pair that fit!

My husband would flip his lid over a pair of jeans that cost $108. He doesn't think any item of clothing should cost more than $20 and if he can pay $4.99 for it, much the better. Shopping with him is a chore, but I try to remind him that if he invests in his clothes, he can wear them for a long time...years, even. He'll pay big money for shoes, though, cause he really only wears the same pair of Sketchers day in and day out.

I think the jeans are cute and can't wait to see you in them. Show us a pic!

I use a "damp dry" setting on my dryer so that I can pull out my jeans before they dry all the way. That helps.

I found some absolutely perfect Levis at Ross this year and bought both pairs in my size. It's not often that you try on a pair that's perfect. Unfortunately, they don't come out of the dryer just perfect. :-(

My two favorite pair are a brand called Duplex by Tyte. I've worn them so much that I predict the knees and seat start to wear out this winter.

I do need some jeans. Maybe I should try Buckle before I go for my uniform jeans (that I love and give me a great booty!).

I hate shopping for jeans. I despise it. I don't look good in clothes anyway, jeans are the worst.

I would love to be able to have the money to buy a really good pair of jeans.

I did like the tip about not drying them, but I'm curious how you keep them from feeling stiff?

Great advice! I never knew that about zapping the stretch right out of them... and um, hello- where is the picture of you in these fabulous jeans? ;)

Btw, I have to brag just a little bit... I'm meeting Ree tomorrow. You know, the Pioneer Woman? Her cookbook is so much fun- I'm making the chicken spaghetti for the babysitters. :) Hopefully I'll have a pic up on my blog in a few days... I can't wait!
