I have a bad history with appliances. They break, often, while in my use. It seems I treat them carelessly with no thought to their delicate needs, TLC, ego boosting or coil vacuuming. I just assume a washing machine, refrigerator or dishwasher will do its job without any help from me.
It seems that is not the case.
These things require maintenance, cleaning and regular checkups. In some cases they can be more trouble than a new puppy.
When my washing machine went out last week for the second time in its short, happy life, I was despondent. I knew if we called the repair man it would be all my fault. I would end up feeling ashamed about the coins I’d failed to remove from pockets, the excessive dirt I’d washed or the library books that had somehow found their way into the wrong places.
I begged my husband to try and fix it himself.
He has very little maintenance skills, but he removed the front cover and pulled out the filter. Sure enough it was packed with filth and some other strange things.
He removed it all and washed it out in the sink, replaced the now clean filter and it worked! My hero!
But what could have caused the filter to clog? The dingy, stained, waded up pieces of cloth that he pulled out of the filter along with lots of dirt turned out to be my washable breast pads.
I guess it was my fault. Again.
I’m just so thankful I didn’t have to hear about it from a repair man.

LOL...but I am laughing WITH you, not AT you! Ha!
Oh my. My washer has been having huge problems this last week and I have been thinking it is not draining properly or something.
I too am like you. I detest laundry and so if it is in your pockets, it will have a 100% chance of going through the wash.
I think my husband needs a tutorial from your husband on how to fix the filter thingy.
Glad the washing machine could be fixed without a repair guy and bill!!! This is sooooo funny!!!
I'm supposed to check pockets before I wash stuff?
Uh oh.
Okay I have a long list of "what not to wash" too but that definitely tops anything on mine! That is too funny.
Breast pads???? I can't believe my internet filter let those dreaded words through. your blog wasn't even blocked as BAD. :)
lol. You crack me up.
*cough* lingerie bag *cough* ;)
Isn't it awesome to have a husband who is capable of doing these things though?? Don't know what I'd do without my Mr. Fixit. Probably be in the poor house by now, with everything that seems to go wrong with my gadgets.
Too funny! :D
Oh...no kidding! I am so right there with you on this...and I need an excuse that legit right about now.
Oh dear! This very thing happened to us about a month or so ago. Well, it happened several times over the months since we had Emma (no, we didn't put it together!) but my husband finally went to the Whirlpool site online to find out what the problem might be. The nursing pads and baby socks were very high on the list as culprits. Lo and behold, what did my dear hubby find when he opened the front panel? Yep, nursing pads, baby socks, a pencil, a couple of Legos....THEN we put it together that our problem really started shortly after the birth of our last little one! ;) Now, I have a lingere bag that I put those socks and pads in and no more problems. Yay! By the way, if you have a front loader, things can also get stuck inside the seal....you know the one inside that keeps the water from leaking out the door....so check in there too occasionally. Too funny! Who knew the problems we would face as moms?
ROFL! Now that would be embarrassing!!!
Hubbies are super heroes in disguise.
Oh my goodness. How embarrassing that would have been! I had a maintenance man at an apartment once try to make me feel bad about my garbage disposal being stopped up. It was not a pleasant experience.
I'm with you: appliances ought to just be tough and do their jobs already!
