Updated to add: This may Work for You.
It all began with one map. I thought needed a map for our homeschool, for our life. Surely everyone should have a map somewhere. I envisioned a wall map of the world, framed nicely and hung by our breakfast table. I imagined dinner conversation about places, children gazing at it and soaking in knowledge as they ate, and a reference for all those places we read about.
I bought a package of two maps from Amazon.com. Cheap maps, but nice looking. They fit into my color scheme so well with yellows and blues and greens. The map had an antique look which I loved. When it arrived I was excited to pick out a frame. It was a big map (50" X 32"). I had to consult Hobby Lobby for framing needs of this size and I had to consult them on a half-off framing day. Even so, the $200 price tag made me dizzy.
I walked back to my van convulsing slightly at what I had done. I said to my friend waiting in the car, “I just spent $200 on a map. Do you think that’s crazy?” She did.
When it was finished and hung I loved it. Though, every time I thought about the cost I had to mentally push that image away, but otherwise, it was exactly what I wanted. One of my children’s first comments was, “I didn’t know there was a real Madagascar!” And I knew it was just what I’d hoped for.
I don’t have a lot of wall space. My dining room turned homeschool room has two windows in it and the rest of the wall space is covered in our history timeline, bookshelves and art. But I did manage to squeeze in one small map of the United States.
In my bedroom I hung the other big U.S. map that came from Amazon.com. Unframed. I also put a small map of the world in my children’s bathroom, right by the toilet. Now they can make good use of their time there. We have two globes and a map of Arkansas in the office. After that first one, I kind of went crazy with maps. Somehow, I reasoned, simply by hanging maps, my children will be penetrated with the knowledge of geography.
But slowly, without curriculum to guide me, we’ve been doing some geography lessons. When a missionary visits our church we draw a picture of the place where they are going, color it and put it in a folder. When we read a book about a specific place we do the same thing. We talk about continents and states and mountains and rivers.
Yesterday my mom and step-father left on a trip through Tennessee and North Carolina. When they called to check in we found out where they were and charted their course. We drew Tennessee, learned it’s capital and put it in our folder.
I already spent the $200 that could have been used for curriculum, so now I have to fly by the seat of my pants and hope that just having a few maps makes a difference. And right now, it seems to be good enough.

Ok, THAT should have been on Works For Me Wednesday. What a great idea! We are redoing my sons bedroom and I keep asking him what he wants to hang on his empty walls. His reply...maps. I'm checking out amazon right now, minus the $200 dollar frames...gulp!
Gayle
Ummm. Haven't you ever spent $200 on curriculum or something dumb that you really didn't love?
I have.
so, the map was a brilliant, well thought out teacher idea. right?
Personally I think it's awesome. Never heard of a map in the bathroom, but hey, who says there has to be only seaside themes?
that is a really cool post, you should have put this in for Works for me Wednesday over at Shannons.
ooh, I see Gayle beat me to the punch! o.k. I second what she said...
Great ideas for the toilet times! :) Our U.S. map in our school room has a kind of laminated finish, so we use dry erase markers on it to map out our vacations and trips. It is amazing how much they learn just by being near a map! They've learned capitals and regions without me saying a word! Now, if only they could learn to diagram sentences the same way!
I have been trying to find a place on our walls for some maps in this new house. There isn't any room in the kitchen (think LOTS AND LOTS of windows), but now I am eyeing our bathroom walls. Neat idea!
Great idea. I think learning geography is so important. I'm always surprised and a little appalled when adults don't even know the geography of our own country. I posted several links on my blog to info on Georgraphy education. I don't know how to make the link clickable so you will have to copy and past it. Hopefully there will be some info you can use.

"Now they can make good use of their time there"... I LOVE it! Brilliant! I am going to start home schooling next fall and geography is something I really want them to learn (public school did me wrong!). I just might take this idea and put it to use. Thanks for posting!
Great tip...we need more maps!
we bought 2 wall maps, too. and since we're in our new house matt has put the nix on putting them on our living room walls with thumbtacks (i wonder why?)
you've done so well flying by the seat of your pants, though! fly on, girl, fly on!
and thanks for the great tips on using those maps (i need them!)
(ps, i'll miss seeing you AGAIN today - brandy can fill you in.)
I have been amazed at what my boys have learned simply by having the maps hung on the wall. They study them...make up games...ask questions. It really is learning at its best!
I didn't know you had another blog. Do you double post here and at HSB, or are you in the process of moving?

my mom did something similar when i was being homeschooled as a kid. can i just say that i have a distinct advantage when playing geography games with my Mister? maps rock.
We love our maps! I have 2 world maps and 1 US map in the schoolroom, along with a small globe and a poster of the Flags of the World. We also have a laminated US map right by our dining table.
One of the world and one US map is LAMINATED. Uhhh...I would die if I spent that much on a frame! Okay, even $40 would've sent me into convulsions.
And one of the world maps (from Sam's Club) is left plain so we can write on it. :-) We've been reading Akebu to Zapotec (one a week) and marking the different countries on the map. It has been WONDERFUL!
Maps are definitely worth the money. And if a frame makes it more pleasing to your eye, then GO FOR IT!
Marsha
wonderful good for you :)
while I dont homeschool anymore we do have a wall map of the world, UNframed though and it is hung by our breakfast table:)
Wall maps have been a vital part of our decor since before I started homeschooling! Mine are unframed & hung with tacks-- in the bedroom hallway at our old house, and in our basement "learning area" at this one. For maps hung in main living areas, I think framing them is a good idea and worth the $$. (I have a friend who did the same thing at a similar cost, if that makes you feel better.)
See if you can find plastic placemats with world & US maps on them as well. We love these, altho they are sometimes a distraction (some days, my kids who would rather look at the maps than eat!). We use them for the "I'm thinking of a..." guessing game we often play-- in this case, thinking of a country, a city, a state, etc. Yes-or-no questions only, and questions like "Is this country blue?" or "Does this country have spaghetti sauce on it" are not allowed! :-)
Great post and comments. I've got to get our maps onto the wall!
Love this idea! I have a large frame I bought on clearance at Target a while back...no I know what I am going to do with it...
